Meet our Associate Member Spotlight for September: Jones Packaging

The "Associate Member Spotlight" is a chance for CHP Canada to highlight to Active members and the consumer health products industry the Associate members who have contributed to the achievements of CHP Canada and the success of the consumer health products industry as a whole.

Each month a different Associate member will be put in the "spotlight". This will include being featured on our website homepage, blog, and e-newsletter, outlining the fantastic services and/or products the Associate member has available to our Active membership.

This month's "Associate Member Spotlight" goes to Jones Packaging Inc. for their continued contributions and long-standing involvement with CHP Canada and the consumer health products industry. Congratulations Jones!

We conducted a short interview with Rob Radich, Senior Vice President, Contract Packaging Services at Jones Packaging, which will provide a better understanding of what this great company has to offer:

1. Tell us about Jones Packaging Inc.:

For more than 130 years, Jones has continued to evolve and grow - from its founding in 1882 as a regional manufacturer of drug boxes and specialty drug labels, to an internationally recognzied leader in delivering unique and integrated solutions for printed packaging and contract packaging, as well as quality products for the safe dispensing of medication. We continue to be the partner of choice for customer-first integrated packaging solutions - more options, less complexity.

Today, our range of products and services includes leading edge printing technology for folding cartons, labels, shrink sleeves, leaflets, pouching, blister packaging, vial filling, cold chain storage and a wide range of specialized dispensing and compliance products for pharmacies, hospitals and long-term care.

Led by the fourth generation of the Jones family, the company's unwavering commitment to quality and patient safety has attracted many of the most recognized global pharmaceutical and consumer brands. Jones also proudly supports the medication dispensing market through sales to pharmacies, hospitals and long-term care facilities across Canada and Europe.

Serving this diverse and international customer base has led to a number of strategic acquisitions over recent years, including a second printed packaging facility in Guelph, ON, overseas operations in the UK and Spain, and a contract packaging facility in Brampton, ON (formerly Ivers-Lee), which moved into a new state-of-the-art plant in 2013.

With multiple locations, key international alliances and a fully integrated service offering, Jones is uniquely positioned to offer many options to simplify the process for our customers while maximizing their brand's value and ensuring consumer well-being.

2. What are the biggest challenges you face as a packaging solutions company?

The consumerism of healthcare has provided significant challenges to our clients - increased SKU management, new drug delivery modalities and the complexity of Rx-to-OTC switch for many brands. All of these trends have implications for packaging components and services. It is important for us to continue to take the complexity out of our clients' businesses by offering incremental value in areas such as project management, speed to market, innovation, depth of service, and superior quality. In 2011, we implemented the Four Disciplines of Execution (4DX) program across the organization to ensure a common focus internally on upholding these differentiators to meet market requirements. The program further enhances our long-standing and ongoing initiatives in the areas of continuous improvement and lean manufacturing. In 2013, we also created a dedicated Technology and Innovation team responsible for proactively exploring and developing packaging solutions in the areas of printed electronics, product security and serialization and patient adherence. We must continue to invest our human and financial capital in all of these areas.

Also, given our strong presence in the highly regulated pharmaceutical and healthcare market, compliance is at the heart of our operations. Licensed by the FDA and Health Canada, our Contract Packaging Services facility is audited regularly by regulatory bodies, as well as our customers. Our processes there are driven by extensive quality systems and cGMPs and must be upheld without fail. In fact, these strict standards drove the deisgn of our 76,000 ft2 facility, which features a primary packaging area with 18 class 100,000 clean rooms - each with 20 HEPA filtered air changes per hour, a state-of-the-art HVAC system, and seamless material flow to minimize complexity and ensure unique product protection.

3. Tell us one thing about Jones Packaging that the consumer health products industry might not know about you:

Many people are unaware of the full scope of our business. As we mentioned above, in addition to our printed and contract packaging services, we also provide pharmacies, hospitals and long-term care facilities with quality products for the safe dispensing of medication. With our company's roots firmly established in the healthcare and pharmacy sector, Jones has been a proud and long-time leader in driving innovation and patient safety in the Canadian medication dispensing market. In fact, we were the first to bring child safety vials to Canadian pharmacies and to co-develop a blister card designed for multi-med regimes. Today, in addition to a wide range of customizable pharmacy consumable products - prescription vials, bottles and ointment jars, compliance cards, prescription labels, bags, operational supplies - we also offer a full line of medical, medication, and mobile computing carts that allow healthcare providers to deliver medication and treatment at the point of care, as well as a pharmacy kiosk that enables pharmacists to offer customers 24/7 access to pharmacy services for the delivery of Rx products, while increasing sales through the dispensing of a multitude of complementary products.

4. Tell us how you became involved with CHP Canada:

Our relationship with CHP Canada began more than 40 years ago when our Contract Packaging Services division (formerly Ivers-Lee) became involved with the orginal Proprietary Articles Trade Association (PATA). Later on, former Ivers-Lee president, Brian Munro, served for many years as a board member for both the Nonprescription Drug Manufacturers Association of Canada (NDMAC) and CHP Canada. The longevity of this relationship is a testament to the value this group brings as an important industry resource and a network that allows members to meet and develop relationships with peers, customers and potential customers.
