2013 Fall Conference – Speaker Spotlight: Scott Sawler

Following is the fifth Speaker Spotlight highlighting speaker details for CHP Canada’s 2013 Fall Conference The Health-Driven Consumer, taking place September 26-27 at the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel in Niagara Falls, ON.

The speaker spotlight for week five is on Mr. Scott Sawler, Director General of the Marketed Health Products Directorate at Health Canada:

Scott Sawler was appointed Director General of the Marketed Health Products Directorate (MHPD) in July 2013.

Before joining MHPD, Scott was the Director General of Natural Health Products Directorate (NHPD) from December 2010 to July 2013, and the Natural Health Products Program Champion.

Prior to working with Health Canada, Scott was the Senior Manager of the Ethics and Regulatory Office for the NCIC Clinical Trials Group – a cooperative oncology group at Queen’s University. Scott worked for many years in industry and with healthcare associations. He has extensive experience in regulatory framework development, consultations and stakeholder relations, and in business management. Scott spent a total of 14 years working for industries and associations.

Scott also holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Chemistry from the University of New Brunswick, a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Laval University, a Masters of Law (LLM) in Health Law from York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School, and a Bachelor of Law (LLB) from the University of Ottawa.

As a speaker on Day 1 of the 2013 Fall Conference, Scott will be outlining a vision for change to the post-market program related to OTCs and natural health products. The centralization of all risk management for marketed health products, achieving the appropriate balance between active and passive surveillance for these products and the analysis of market data will ensure that the program is targeted, efficient and transparent. These changes will allow the Marketed Health Products Directorate to better inform the pre-market programs on the appropriate level of oversight required for these products and will allow Health Canada to better understand the impact of policy changes on industry.
