Health Canada to Host Webinar on Sunscreen Pilot

On January 11th, Health Canada released a DEL (Drug Establishment Licence) bulletin to inform stakeholders of a one-year pilot directed at Canadian importers of finished sunscreen products fabricated in the US.

On January 23, 2017, Health Canada will provide the details of a one-year pilot for sunscreen products that will allow modified options for testing of finished sunscreen products fabricated in and imported from the US. The pilot will run from February 27, 2017 to February 27, 2018. The communication in the form of a DEL Bulletin will include instructions for registering for this pilot.

A key feature of this pilot is that Canadian importers, meeting the criteria for inclusion, will have the option of importing sunscreen products into Canada without the need to perform duplicative confirmatory testing.

Only OTC sunscreen products (that have a Drug Identification Number) and that are fabricated in, and being imported directly from the US, are eligible for the pilot. Additionally, the US fabricator must already be listed on the Foreign Building Annex to the importer’s DEL.

An information session webinar for stakeholders is planned for January 26th. We will attend this session and continue to influence elements of the proposed pilot.
