Meet our Associate Member Spotlight for May: Jones Packaging Inc.
April 29, 2019
This month’s Spotlight is Jones Packaging Inc. for their continued contributions and involvement with CHP Canada and the consumer health products industry.
1. Describe your business, your clients and the products/services you provide.
From our founding days in 1882 as a regional manufacturer of drug boxes and specialty drug labels, Jones has been at the forefront of identifying and responding to important market needs and creating opportunities for our customers. Today, we are a global leader in delivering leading-edge healthcare packaging founded upon a culture of innovation that has driven many “market firsts.”
Our integrated printed and contract packaging solutions include intelligent packaging, folding cartons, labels, pouching, blistering, vial filling, secondary packaging and recovery packaging. We also offer a range of medication dispensing and delivery products for pharmacy, hospitals and long-term care.
Led by the fourth generation of the Jones family, we have been a long-time and trusted partner for some of the most recognized global pharmaceutical and consumer brands, and we support many of the largest pharmacy groups and independent pharmacies, hospitals and long-term care facilities across Canada and Europe to advance their brand’s value within the healthcare industry.
2. Describe how your business benefits the OTC/self-care market.
Our strategically located facilities, key international alliances and innovative, integrated portfolio simplify the packaging process for our customers while promoting consumer health and wellness, enhancing medication adherence and protecting product integrity.
Our Contract Packaging Services division has demonstrated commitment to OTC/self-care customer satisfaction and packaging excellence through diverse services, professional expertise and strict quality standards:
• Quality – We take pride in being compliant with Health Canada (C.02) and FDA (21 CFR Part 210 and 211) for solid, liquid and powder product formats.
• Service – From small companies looking to enter the market to the most recognized global brands, many of our customer relationships have been active for more than 20 years. We deliver on complex packaging projects that are difficult for our customers to execute, while offering unique packaging formats for product differentiation.
• Capabilities – From pouching, blistering and vial filling to secondary packaging and recovery packaging, we become an extension of our customers’ operations. Our cGMP facility offers a dependable environment for primary and secondary packaging with over 15 production lines in 18 individual class 100,000 clean rooms.
• Delivery – Shipping to the US on a daily basis, we consistently meet our customers’ expectations for batch release, shipping and logistics management.
Our integrated offering extends to our Printed Packaging division, which provides packaging ideation support, in-house pre-press services, graphic design and structural development for folding cartons and pressure-sensitive labels. This commitment to driving operational efficiencies means unparalleled value for our customers.
We also have alliances with widely respected international brand and pharmaceutical packaging organizations, such as International Packaging Group (IPG), that not only give Jones a high profile within our industry around the world, but also provide us with the opportunity to be the first to bring new ideas and best practices to North American markets. This international reach brings access to cross-country/continent collaboration opportunities and project management services for global brands.
3. What innovative new products/services are you working on?
With the launch of Health Canada’s Plain Language Labelling (PLL) Regulations for OTC packaging in Canada and similar regulations for natural health products soon to follow, we developed a PLL platform complete with proven packaging solutions and a proprietary PLL development process to help our customers launch compliant packaging to the market quickly. Our solutions accommodate more product information without increasing retail footprints or sacrificing quality, performance and brand presence on-shelf. We are pleased to have already launched commercial solutions in partnership with a global pharmaceutical brand.
Jones has also been at the forefront of the digital packaging revolution – from developing mobile consumer packaging that provides important differentiation to OTC brand owners to intelligent packaging that helps patients manage complex medication regimes.
The intelliFLEX Innovation Alliance recently recognized us with its CPES Commercialization Award for breakthrough work integrating verified near-field communication (NFC) tags from Thin Film Electronics (Thinfilm) into folding cartons on high-speed production lines. Since then, we have worked with Thinfilm and California-based YUNI Beauty LLC to launch a series of NFC-enabled cosmetic products that allow consumers to tap packaging with smartphones and receive real-time brand experiences – from promotions to product education and e-commerce reorder opportunities.
Considering intelligent packaging innovations, we are also working with European associations such as the Catalan Council of Pharmacists in Spain to trial intelligent adherence packaging. Through the use of printed electronics and NFC technology, we have developed monitored medication adherence systems that track whether patients have taken medications, and can also send notifications to healthcare providers and caregivers when doses have been missed – all with the aim to improve health outcomes.
4. Tell us about your people. What sets them apart from your competition?
