Meet our Associate Member Spotlight for October: Advanced Symbolics Inc.
This month’s Spotlight is Advanced Symbolics Inc. (ASI) for their continued contributions and involvement with CHP Canada and the consumer health products industry.
1. Describe your business, your clients and the products/services you provide.
ASI is a Public Opinion Research Firm that utilizes a patented Artificial Intelligence technology to accurately measure marketing and messaging strategies using a randomized, controlled, online sample of 215,000 Canadians from coast to coast to coast. We measure people’s natural engagement score – what are Canadians saying right now, unprompted on a particular topic. ASI’s patented technique for creating randomized, controlled samples of social media users in any geographic region, effectively replaces traditional telephone surveys for market research. We work in both the private and public sectors.
2. Describe how your business benefits the OTC/self-care market.
We are able to measure behavioural changes in the self-care market. By using real-time data and longitudinal studies, we are able to determine if marketing campaigns, strategies or policies were effective or failed in reaching the target audience. You can’t improve what you can’t measure. ASI has the ability to measure factors that were not measurable in years past due to sample and technological constraints.
3. What innovative new products/services are you working on?
We are currently working on topic discovery. Topic Discovery is a facet of Artificial Intelligence. Specifically, it’s a machine learning technique for extracting coherent topic descriptions from a collection of documents. While there are well established algorithms for this purpose (e.g. Latent Dirichlet allocation), they do not perform well on the short documents found in social media (e.g. Tweets). Additionally, social documents have additional features not present in other documents, such as temporal-spacial location and an associated graph structure from the social network. This makes topic discovery in Social Networks a unique problem in natural language processing. We are developing new Topic Discovery algorithms that take advantage of the rich structure of Social Networks.
4. Tell us about your people. What sets them apart from your competition?
Our team, like the projects we work on, is varied and diverse. Coming into work Monday mornings are people from three different continents with different backgrounds. We have three PhD’s who lead our Data Science and Research team but they still lose in the football pool to our CEO. A multicultural aspect to our team gives us a myriad of different perspectives to work through business projects inside the office and a lot to talk about outside of the office. Having this type of collaboration as a team is essential when working to solve the clients business problems. Our teamwork has been noticed by clients who enjoy working with ASI as we establish a winning culture. We are able to quickly assess what our clients business requirements are and we can deliver it to them when they need it. We are headquartered in Ottawa and have offices in Toronto and are opening a new office in the United States.
5. Describe your mission and vision, and why your company makes a great business partner.
We want to help organizations and policy makers make better decisions – based on accurate information – for the benefit of people and society.
