Meet our Associate Member Spotlight for November: McCarthy Consultant Services Inc.

The “Associate Member Spotlight” is a chance for CHP Canada to profile the associate members who contribute to the achievements of CHP Canada and the success of the consumer health products industry as a whole.

Each month a different associate member is put in the “spotlight.” This includes being featured on our website homepage, blog, and e-newsletter, outlining the fantastic services and/or products the associate member has available to our members.

This month’s “Associate Member Spotlight” goes to McCarthy Consultant Services Inc. for their continued contributions and long-standing involvement with CHP Canada and the consumer health products industry.

We conducted a short interview with Stephen McCarthy, Director, Business Development, which provides a better understanding of what this great company has to offer:

1. Tell us about McCarthy Consultant Services Inc. (MCSI):

MCSI was founded in 1981 by David McCarthy and has grown to be an internationally recognized name in the areas of regulatory and quality management services. We have a diverse group of associates with significant industry and consulting experience in their areas of expertise, which allows MCSI to assist our clients with all health care product categories regulated by Health Canada.

2. What are the biggest challenges you face as a consulting company in Canada?

A significant challenge is the frequent change in persons at the helm at Health Canada, and the consequent difficulty in maintaining continuity as each successive person’s focus of interest is often different from that of their predecessor. This can also make it difficult to build a working relationship, where constructive feedback on best methods of implementing current Health Canada policy can be obtained. MCSI works to ensure our clients’ needs are continually met as we manage their affairs through the difficulties that ongoing, and sometimes unpredictable, change can bring.

3. What are some recent trends that McCarthy Consultant Services has witnessed in our industry?

Having been in business for 35 years, MCSI has been witness to many trends and changes in the industry influenced by changes at Health Canada. A current trend appears to be ‘what is old is new again’. The introduction last year of the Regulatory Operations and Regions Branch is very similar to the regulatory and vigilance system that Health Canada had in place in the past, and harkens back to the regulatory compliance process that was in place in the early 2000s.

The establishment of the Natural Health Products Directorate has been a significant change that came about as a result of considerable pressure from special interest groups, with the establishment of the regulatory framework for natural health products and the current NHP Regulations.

A ‘new’ initiative is the Health Canada Consultation – Regulation of Self-Care Products in Canada, currently in progress. This is an enormous shift in thinking within Health Canada and for the self-care products industry in general. Health Canada is to be commended for this initiative and their willingness to work closely with the various segments of industry – notably industry associations including CHP Canada, to accomplish the best possible approach to making the regulation of self-care products equitable and realistic, to ultimately benefit the Canadian public.

Our in-depth knowledge of the history of Health Canada in its many iterations since the early 1980s has given our company a good perspective on where we have been as a health care products industry in general and how we can assist our clients as we go forward.

4. What do you value most about your involvement with CHP Canada?

Through the years of our involvement and membership with CHP Canada, we have developed valuable alliances within the industry and within Health Canada as well. These have been beneficial to us as a business, as is the personal benefit of the many friendships we have built over the past three decades.

Our long association with CHP Canada has been a big plus in keeping a finger on the pulse of the self-care products industry!
